Monday’s Media 9.17.2012

A full day after the National Hockey League locked out their players (including faces of the League Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby) the Washington Capitals’ Captain celebrated his 27th birthday. To commemorate Ovechkin’s birthday and his impact on the League NHL Commisioner Gary Bettman rushed a birthday card to Ovechkin, one which I was able to grab a photocopy of. Happy Birthday, Alex!, excited to see you on NHL ice ASAP.

Brouwer Inks Extension Before CBA Expires

The Washington Capitals announced the resigning of twenty seven year old power forward Troy Brouwer early Wednesday morning, an $11 million, three year contract. The extension occurred just three days before the expiration of the National Hockey League’s current Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Brouwer has one year of contracted work to still play (one year/$2.35 mil) before Wednesday’s three season deal begins. The Stanley Cup Champion is now part of the Capitals through 2016, General Manager George McPhee highlighting the power winger’s goal totals over the past three years and well-rounded game to validate the extension. A seventh round selection in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft the former Moose Jaw Warrior had his work cut out for him since becoming Chicago Blackhawk’s property. Brouwer has shed his enforcer rivaling PIMs (132 in 2005), developed a game that compliments his stature (6’2″, 214lbs.), and still continues to play with an edge that encourages the opposition to think twice.

One week from today will mark the expiration of the National Hockey League’s Collective Bargaining Agreement. If NHL Commisioner Gary Bettman and NHL Players Association Executive Director Donald Fehr have not agreed on a new CBA by next Saturday, the League will begin its second lockout in eight years.

Fortunately for die-hards September 15th, 2012 also marks the debut of Miken Hockey’s newest stick, the Zero Limit. I have had the opportunity to demo the product for the past month and put the stick through its paces, exceeding fifty hours of ice time in forty days of trial.

The Zero Limit was brought to ModSquadHockey‘s annual Summer Jam, an extended afternoon ice slot reserved for the demo of future retail hockey products, by Miken Hockey’s Product Manager Jason Kacures. As with hockey equipment’s major players (Bauer, CCM/Reebok, Easton, Warrior) Jason brought a range of products for demonstration and critique. What Miken Hockey did specifically for the Zero Limit was produce individualized sticks for demonstration, critique, and later personal use based on our preferences noted before Summer Jam. My stick arrived with the BP10 pattern, a clone of Easton’s popular Sakic offering, and a whippy 70 flex handle.
